New Chemokine ELISA Kits

Chemokines are a class of relatively small (8-14 kD) proteins that can induce a chemotactic or migratory response. As is the case in many disease models, the type of cell drawn to a location can dictate whether an inflammatory or immunoregulatory response is generated. Nguyen et al., investigated the interplay between STAT3, chemokines like RANTES, CCL28, and CCL19, and tumor progression in the gut.

Nguyen et al., utilized a model of inflammatory bowel disease associated with colorectal cancer. During chronic inflammation, immune cells can produce IL-6, which activates STAT3 in the local epithelial cells. Activation of epithelial STAT3 in inflamed intestine is specifically linked to inflammation-induced tumor development. CD8+ T cells and macrophages can be recruited during this process (through Sphingosine-1-Phosphate (S1P)). These cells can damage colonic epithelial cells, and promote tumor development. The loss of STAT3 resulted in increased expression of CCL19, CCL28, and RANTES, chemokines associated with Treg recruitment. With STAT3 out of the picture, Tregs may be able to infiltrate these areas, reduce inflammation, and prevent tumor progression.
